presenting Jordan merritt and the band table
read the story and listen to the song,
“You Have been good to me”
the story and the study
I remember when I first showed this song to my friend, Cliff Preston. I told him that I wrote it in 20 minutes and he said, “You wrote this song over years and years! You only penned it in 20 minutes.” That’s the truth.
It’s easy to sing songs about God’s goodness in the highs of life, but we grow in our depth and understanding of His goodness through the valleys. In the middle of a season of a multitude of questions and questioning, “You have been good to me” became a thankful faith refrain. Financial questions. Relational questions. Questions about my family’s future. Questions about what God had for me to do. It was all scary, but there at the piano that morning:
“You have been good to me, so You will be good to me.”
The peace of God in me and in that room was so powerful. Surpassing understanding; reminding me that the kindness of God had gone before me and led me into this moment; and that His goodness would follow me all the days of my life.
It’s so easy for us to get caught up in the throws of life. Honestly, some of us are so bound by anxiety it has tried to take over our personality or “identity”. And we are allowing it! But God gives us a better option.
Philippians 4:6 says to “be anxious for NOTHING”.
NOTHING
I don’t know about you, but that’s not easy for me. My brain is constantly on the hamster wheel of life trying to figure out all the things that are outside of my control. It’s a constant war in my head to give the questions to the Lord and focus on what He’s told me to do. But, His word says:
“In everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”
If Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever, then I can rest knowing that the One who has never failed me will NEVER fail me.
God’s encouragement for us all (to me) is to present our requests to God and to cast our cares on Him. And after doing that, to rest in the consistency of His goodness in our lives, knowing that He is good and that everything He does is good. Yes, He is “able to do immeasurably more than we can ask, think, or imagine”.
Let’s REST in Him today. In His perfect peace.
You have been good to me lyrics
Verse 1
At the edge of understanding, I find peace in Your unfailing love
So wonderful! When my fears are suffocating
I find peace in Your unfailing love so wonderful!
Pre Chorus
I won't be afraid. I trust in what You say
I won't be afraid. I trust in what You say
Chorus
'Cause You won't leave me in the valley of the shadow
I know Your word is true
'Cause You won't leave me in the valley of the shadow
I put my trust in You!
Verse 2
In my death or in my living
I find strength in Your unfailing love so powerful!
I'm secure here in Your blessing,
So I rest in Your unfailing love so powerful!

I know that You won't delay
I know that You'll make a way
You have been good to me
So You will be good to me
I know that You'll pull me through

So You will be good to me
